Suicide Awareness in Schools

Supportive Activists Foundation has successfully conducted a school mental Health training at Brufut Upper and Senior Secondary School on the 17th of June, 2022.

The purpose of the training is to educate students on understanding mental Health, Mental illness, Accurate information about suicide is important in order to identify those who may need more support and to debunk some common myths about suicide and also sensitizes them about the risk factors and symptoms associated with various mental health conditions.
The WHO report shows that In 2019, nearly a billion people – including 14% of the world’s adolescents – were living with a mental disorder. Suicide accounted for more than 1 in 100 deaths and 58% of suicides occurred before age of 50.
This is alarming If they are raised in environments where they are exposed to things such as violence, substance abuse, and various other forms of abuse, they will most likely begin to develop a low self-esteem which can ultimately lead to depression and thoughts of wanting to commit suicide

Our Psycho-education program in schools is to creates awareness and can be resourceful for individuals students and their loved ones to gain self awareness on mental health, educate people about suicide and suicidal ideation, No one experiences suicidal ideation the same way as someone else. Understanding the signs, symptoms and side effects of suicidal ideation is a key component toward starting the recovery journey. It also helps break the stigma associated with mental illness, additionally; it can promote efforts for treatment and recovery.
This initiative will help students to understand how to handle stress, relate with others and make healthy choices or decisions.
Mental health is important in every stage of life and its significant to promote awareness.
Moreover after the presentation the students were giving the opportunity to share their opinions of which they made mention one of the student from their school commit suicide a weeks before our intervention. So they are pleased to learn new coping strategies and ways forward,they are ready to share with their colleagues to help brake the chain and promote positive change in school.
Many special thanks goes to our volunteer who always endures the best of volunteerism and not forgetting the students of Brufut Upper and Senior Secondary School and the school administration.
